Case study city: Salzburg

Salzburg (Austria) is with its 150.000 inhabitants (2012) a relatively small city. It is located at the foot of the Northern Alps and its old town is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Salzburg has a high percentage of green areas within the city boundaries and significant parts of them are protected by a declaration on green spaces. However, the pressure on the green spaces is high due to city densification projects and a continuously rising demand for new flats and houses.

The URBES activities in Salzburg focus on analyses of methods and indicators for non-monetary valuation of ecosystem services, looking at urban parks, urban forests, agricultural, commercial and residential areas (service providing units), and their constituents (service providing elements). Those elements will be assessed regarding their properties to provide ecosystem services like storm water regulation, food production, recreation, microclimate regulation and nature experience.

The developed valuation methodology aims to be transferable to other cities and will thus be tested in other case study cities. The results will be used as an input for the multi-criteria analysis of work package 5 and for the work in the packages 6 and 7. Information about Salzburg as a case study city can furthermore be provided to support the other URBES partners in their work.

Salzburg is host city for the the URBES partner University of Salzburg. Contact person is , leader for URBES Work Package 4, Non-monetary valuation.
